An Introduction to the World of Coffee: More than an Everyday Drink.

Coffee, one of the most popular drinks in the world, surprises with a rich diversity of flavours far beyond what most people think. It is often associated with bitter, ashy notes, but in reality coffee offers a wide range of flavours, from the sweetness of chocolate to citrusy hints of lemon.

In this article we'll explore how a coffee's origin has a significant influence on its flavour profile. We'll look at four crucial factors — CLIMATE, ALTITUDE, COFFEE VARIETIES and PROCESSING METHODS — and how each of them plays a fundamental role in creating the unique sensory experience that every cup of coffee offers.

How Do You Make a Delicious Coffee?

IT'S PRETTY SIMPLE

YOU DON'T NEED TO BUY ANY MACHINES

With the coffee maker you already have at home, you can enjoy a great coffee. The difference lies in the quality and freshness of the coffee itself. Moka pot, French press, drip… tell us which coffee maker you have and the Club Quinto Café team will tell you how to make an in-cre-di-ble coffee.

The Impact of Climate on Coffee Flavour

Climate is one of the main factors affecting how flavours develop in coffee. The amount of sunlight, temperatures and rainfall patterns influence how long the coffee cherries take to ripen on the plant, and therefore how their flavours develop. A warmer climate with steady temperatures can produce ripe coffee beans with chocolate and nutty flavour profiles; these tend to be simple, low-acidity coffees. In contrast, cooler climates can produce beans with greater flavour diversity, with brighter, citrusy notes.

Altitude: Elevating Coffee Flavours

The altitude at which coffee is grown also plays a fundamental role in its flavour. Coffee farms at higher elevations, such as on mountain slopes, offer ideal growing conditions. The temperature swing between day and night at higher altitudes allows the cherries to ripen more slowly and fully, contributing to more intense and complex flavours in the cup.

For example, Quinto's Colombian coffee is grown high in the mountains at 1900 metres above sea level, which gives it predominant flavours of caramel sweetness and mandarin acidity.

3. Coffee varieties: a diversity of plants.

There are many coffee varieties, each with its own unique flavour characteristics. When we talk about varieties, we mean the type of plant within a species. Within the Arabica species there are countless varieties, such as Caturra, Castillo, Catuai, Bourbons and Geisha, among others. These are all different plants that produce tasting notes with nuances ranging from floral notes to fruity flavours.

In Kenya, for example, SL28 is one of the most common varieties. It is a Bourbon line characterised by the sweet, floral notes and bright acidity you can taste in Quinto Café's Floral profile.

4. Processing methods: the art of accentuating flavours.

The way coffee is processed has a significant impact on its flavour profile. Washed, natural and honey (semi-washed) processes bring out different characteristics in the coffee. Washed coffees tend to produce cleaner, brighter cups, while the natural process can add fruity, sweet notes. The honey process combines elements of both and offers a unique experience.

Try the Ethiopian Fruity profile, the result of a natural process — an explosion of flavour on the palate.

Conclusion.

Coffee is a fascinating drink that goes far beyond what we usually imagine. Its unique flavour is the result of a complex interplay between climate, altitude, coffee varieties and processing methods. Every cup offers an exciting adventure of flavours and aromas that reflect the place the coffee comes from. By appreciating how these factors shape coffee's sensory experience, we can step into a world of diversity and delight. Next time you enjoy a cup of Quinto Café, take a moment to savour it and discover its nuances — and travel to the exquisite origins this wonderful coffee comes from.
